Presidential and State Primaries Scheduling

Consolidated Primaries: No

Idaho is one of the states that have not merged their presidential and state primaries. On a Presidential Election year, presidential primaries and State primaries are scheduled to run on different days.

In Idaho, State and Presidential primaries are parially closed. A party may elect to open its primary to unaffiliated votes and voters affiliated with other parties by notifying the Secretary of State's office by the last Tuesday before the election. After 2012, parties could decide prior to each election whether to permit unaffiliated voters or members of other parties to vote in their primaries.

Voting In Primaries

  • In primary elections, unless the party chooses to allow others outside the party to participate in its primary election, only registered voters of a political party may vote to select their party’s nominees. In other words, at primary elections, registered Republicans may vote only for Republican candidates, and registered Democrats may vote only for Democratic candidates. Persons who are registered as “unaffiliated” (meaning not affiliated with any political party) may not vote for partisan candidates in primary elections unless the party decides to allow them. However, an unaffiliated voter may affiliate with a party up to or on Election Day and vote in that party's election. Independent candidates appear on the ballot only at the general election.

Delegates and Presidential Primaries

The presidential primary process involves selecting delegates who will represent the state at the party's national convention. Delegates selected from the primary elections attend the party's national convention, where they officially nominate the presidential candidate. The candidate with the majority of delegates becomes the party's nominee for the presidential election.
