Presidential and State Primaries Scheduling
Consolidated Primaries: No
Georgia is one of the states that have Not merged their presidential and state primaries. On a Presidential Election year, presidential primaries and State primaries are scheduled to run on different dates
Georgia is an Open-primary state. The State has nonpartisan registration. There is no option to affiliate with a political party on the voter registration form.
Voting In Primaries
- All voters may choose which party ballot they will vote on. They are held to that affiliation in the case of a runoff election. When you choose a party during a primary, you may only participate in that party’s runoff. You may not switch parties for the runoff. However, if you vote Nonpartisan during the initial election, then you have not yet chosen a party. This means that you are eligible to participate in either party’s primary runoff.
Delegates and Presidential Primaries
The presidential primary process involves selecting delegates who will represent the state at the party's national convention. Delegates selected from the primary elections attend the party's national convention, where they officially nominate the presidential candidate. The candidate with the majority of delegates becomes the party's nominee for the presidential election.
