Presidential and State Primaries Scheduling

Consolidated Primaries: no

Utah is one of the states that have not merged their presidential and state primaries. On a Presidential Election year, presidential primary and State primary are scheduled to run on different days

The state law permits political parties to choose whether to allow unaffiliated voters or voters not registered with the party to participate in their nominating contests before each election cycle. The Democratic Party allows party members and unaffiliated voters to participate in their primaries. Only registered Republicans are allowed to participate in the Republican primary.

If you are affiliated with either the Democratic or Republican Party, you will automatically receive a mail ballot. However, if you are not affiliated with either the Democratic or Republican Party and want to vote in the Democratic Presidential Primary Election, contact your county clerk to request a ballot, or vote in person by simply visiting an early voting location or Election Day voting location and request a Democratic ballot from the poll worker.

If you want to vote in the Republican Presidential Primary Election, you must affiliate with the Republican Party.

Delegates and Presidential Primaries

The presidential primary process involves selecting delegates who will represent the state at the party's national convention. Delegates selected from the primary elections attend the party's national convention, where they officially nominate the presidential candidate. The candidate with the majority of delegates becomes the party's nominee for the presidential election. Candidates Ballot access rules vary depending on the candidate’s political party.
