Idaho is one of the 48 states that have a winner-takes-all rule for the Electoral College. In these States, whichever candidate receives a majority of the popular vote, or a plurality of the popular vote (less than 50 percent but more than any other candidate), takes all of the state’s Electoral votes.Idaho is one of the states that do not require their electors to vote as pledged.

How Does Idaho Select Its Electors?

  • Presidential electors are selected according to party rules and regulations. The state chairman of each political party shall certify the names of the presidential and vice-presidential candidates and presidential electors to the secretary of state.

When Do The Electors Vote?

  • The electors chosen to elect a president and vice-president of the United States shall, at twelve (12) o'clock noon on the day which is or may be directed by the Congress of the United States, meet at the seat of government of this state, and then and there perform the duties enjoined upon them by the Constitution and laws of the United States. Each elector of president and vice-president of the United States shall, before the hour of twelve (12) o'clock on the day next preceding the day fixed by the law of Congress to elect a president and vice-president, give notice to the governor that he is at the seat of government and ready at the proper time to perform the duties of an elector.
